Welcome to the Slovaks in the RAF 1939 – 1945 website.
On this site, we publish information about Slovak citizens who served as volunteers in the Royal Air Force (RAF) units during the World War II from 1939 to 1945.
Most of the soldiers listed were born and spent their pre-war lives in Slovakia. Others were born in Slovakia, but for various reasons, left temporarily, and the war caught up with them abroad. Some emigrated from Slovakia, while others moved to Slovakia from different countries. … Therefore, the list includes soldiers who were born:
– in Slovakia and lived there before joining the foreign resistance
– outside Slovakia but demonstrably lived in Slovakia before joining the foreign resistance
– outside Slovakia and served in the Slovak army before joining the foreign resistance
– in Slovakia but lived abroad before joining the foreign resistance
Our aim is not to create the largest possible list of Slovaks. Instead, we strive to provide as much information as possible about the soldiers whose lives were connected to Slovakia before the World War II. Their post-war fates were long affected by the Communist regime, which did everything possible to make their lives difficult and tried to erase their stories from our history. Therefore, we will be very grateful for any information that can help expand the data we have gathered from literature and military archives and bring closer the lives of these individuals who should never be forgotten.
